Introducing CleanOceanNFT

Removing plastic from our oceans one NFT at a time

Save our oceans. The slogan crying out from a collection discarded leaflets caught my eye as I walked through Hyde Park in London earlier this year. It wasn’t carrying a sentiment that I had never seen before – years of watching David Attenborough’s Blue Planet had given me a basic understanding of the fragility of our oceans – but on that day it hit a nerve. I’d recently endured Plastic Ocean and Seaspiracy – two Netflix docufilms exposing the damage being done to our marine environment – which had ignited a burning desire to do more.

I buried my head in research to try and learn all I could about the extent of this issue, simultaneously turning on an endless tap of murky reality. Every day approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans. 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution annually. Plastic production has been forecast to grow by 60% by 2030 and to treble by 2050.

These were just three facts that outline the cause, effect, and prospects of plastic pollution in our oceans if we don’t act soon. Having seen a frustrating lack of progress from those at the top of the food chain – current commitments by governments and businesses will only reduce the annual volume of plastic flowing into the ocean by about 7% by 2040, according to the World Economic Forum – it became clear that more was needed from people, like me, if we were to make a tangible difference to the future of our oceans.

Introducing CleanOceanNFT

It is at this point I introduce CleanOceanNFT. Having teamed up with a group of friends – compiled of artists, developers, social experts and more – we created a project that leverages the rising popularity of NFTs while making a difference to the future of our oceans. We created a collection of unique, hand-drawn images of ocean creatures – thanks to our talented artist Smiley Sloth – for people to buy and pledge their support to our goal: reduce the amount of plastic in the ocean.

But, I hear you ask, how does purchasing an NFT help clean up the oceans? Well, this is where CleanOceanNFT comes into its own; we pledge to donate $8.50 of every NFT sale to our partner ocean clean-up charity. While this may seem to be a small contribution in isolation, it is a commitment that, when our community gathers together, is already becoming a significant step towards a cleaner tomorrow for our oceans.

Admittedly, entering the NFT market might not be everyone’s first port of call for a sustainable initiative. The NFT market has received its fair share of criticism for its environmental impact and – when we consider those hosted on the Ethereum blockchain – there is cause for concern. In 2018, Ethereum used more electric energy than Iceland, so we had to find a greener way of doing things.

But we found a solution. CleanOceanNFT is based on the Cardano blockchain, a proof-of-stake system that requires significantly less computing power and electricity than its more traditional counterparts Ethereum and Bitcoin. We hold immense trust in the environmental prospects of Cardano technology and believe this is the leading blockchain for the future of NFTs.

Creating a community for a cleaner tomorrow

The reception to CleanOceanNFT so far has been nothing short of exceptional. For our grass roots project to accumulate 600 mints in under a week is really humbling and a testament to the work being done behind the scenes by our excellent team. We’re building a global community of people that care about the future of our oceans enough to take action, and we’re delighted to welcome each and every individual to our movement.

And we’re only just getting started. We’re already growing at an exceptional speed and contributions to our nominated charity now equate to 600 football fields of plastic cleared from the Great Ocean Garbage Patch. Our next goal is 1,000 mints and we will work tirelessly to exceed this and keep growing so we can take a greater step to creating a cleaner tomorrow for our oceans.
